Commissioned by the Hong Kong Festival Wind Orchestra for the celebration of its 30th Anniversary.
The work, relatively short but challenging, comprised of 3 movements to be played non-stopped in a whole. The first movement is mainly a mixture of 7/8 and 3/4 time with a short rhythmic motive introduced by the Timpani and Bass Drum right at the very beginning. An energetic motivic melodic line is then carried by the Bass instruments and the section ended up by featuring 2 Piccolos, Flutes and other woodwinds. Hemiola is heard especially important in the first movement and later throughout the piece. (“Hemiola” is the ratio 3:2. In rhythm, it refers to three beats of equal value in the time normally occupied by 2 beats).
The sweet oboe solo directly leads into the second movement as a peaceful Intermezzo.
An easy listening tune for the Quick March featuring the soli Trombones and Trumpets with the flourishing Horns, the woodwinds and percussions brings the third movement to a grandeur and shiny Coda.
