Introduction and Allegro

A special commissioned work for the Horn virtuoso Professor Frank Lloyd and the

HKBDA Brass Ensemble.  An opening in the style of a typical Horn call with its natural harmonics, a quasi-Hakka folk style was announced in conjunction with a conventional call leads into the Introduction, follows with a passage solely dedicated to all open Horns in a group. Trumpet section peacefully joins as a succession of triads in its inversion. Dialogue between the soloist and the group follows with a short recall of the open Horn, then gradually falls into the Allegro (non troppo), where the motive again constructed from the open notes of the Horn and developed into a short musical phrase, always ‘arguing’ with the accompanying group of Brass sonority. Chords in open 4ths throughout the piece generated the power with accented rhythms in this Allegro section. A melancholy phrase serves as the middle section and when the energetic motive recaps, leads to a codetta with the soloist and the 1st trumpet sounds the ending section. A showcase for the soloist and the ensemble indeed.
