Two in Harmony 諧、雙譜 (2018)

Composed for Alto Saxophone, Erhu and Wind Orchestra. Commissioned by the HK International Saxophone Society, sponsored by C.A.S.H.

 (為中音薩克管、二胡及交響管樂團而作)

Yuan (fate) is the convergence of humanity: allowing us to know, to help, to love, and to learn from each other; a state of symbiosis that brings serenity and balance.

Yuan (fate) is also the convergence of musical notes: influencing, co-ordinating, and conflicting with each other; this too is a state of symbiosis, bringing forth intricate harmonies and exhilarating contrasts.

The combination of the Saxophone, Erhu, and the Wind Orchestra, although perplexing on paper, surprisingly compliments one another. Not only does it highlight emerging dynamics from the meeting of unique timbres, but also illustrates the harmony created by these instruments under one piece that merges the stylistic inclinations of the East and West. It is a true state of musical symbiosis.
