A work for concert band was commissioned for the ‘CBDNA 2006 Southern Division Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee U.S.A., conducted by Dr. Thomas E. Verrier. Later performed by the Hong Kong Youth NeoWinds Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Danilo Delfin. The work was also performed in Beijing with the Beijing Youth Palace Symphonic Band on the 27th January 2007, with the composer conducted the performance.
The music depicts a joyful festive scene of the Chinese New Year, based on a very popular New Year tune, and consisted of 3 sections: Allegro, Andante Tranquillo and Allegro Energetico. A joyous introduction with fragments from the theme is constructed with a succession of 3rds and tri-tones, followed by a twisted shape of the theme accompanied with parallel tr-tones in irregular meters. The joyful melody gradually appears and repeats twice before the closing of the section which leads directly into the second section.
The second section consists of retrograde-fragments created from the theme. It suggests a serene mood but with movements, sounded by the Clarinet section with careful coloring and dynamic shaping. Vibes and Bells play an ostinato with muted Trumpets and Trombone.
Without traditional Chinese percussion instruments, the third section starts with a rhythmic pattern which recall the sound of these instruments playing in a crowded party. Tonal center is shifting back and forth while the orchestration is quite imaginative on this Chinese theme.
