Dizi and Chamber Orchestra version (1986)
This work was originally composed in 1966 by Jian Guangyi and Wang Zhiwei, inspired by their life in the Yikezhao League of Inner Mongolia. Using the melodic style of Mongolian folk songs, they created this piece for dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) and Chinese Orchestra. The introduction portrays the vast and expansive grasslands: under the blue sky and white clouds, herds of cattle and sheep roam freely, evoking a tranquil, peaceful, and joyful life that enchants listeners. The first section, a lyrical adagio flavored with Mongolian folk song, expresses the herdsmen’s love for their new life. The second section, built on a pentatonic melody with a lively rhythm, depicts herdsmen galloping on fine steeds. The third section broadens in tempo, with the melody unfolding gracefully. The fourth and fifth sections, featuring solo passages, employ techniques such as flutter-tonguing and rapid fingerwork, vividly imitating the neighing of horses. Finally, under strong rhythmic patterns, the music intensifies to portray the bustling atmosphere of joyous people and neighing horses across the boundless grasslands, concluding in a climactic ending.
Originally written for dizi and folk ensemble. This arrangement was commissioned by Dizi soloist Mr. Wai Sing-fat in and premiered by the Hong Kong Camarata in its inauguration concert at the AC Hall, Hong Kong Baptist University, conducted by famous violinist Mr. Miran Kojian, concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
The version for Dizi and Band was completed later in 1989.
