“Yangguan Sandie”

Tenor and Orchestra version (1981)

An ancient Chinese melody, also known as “Yangguan Tune” or “Weicheng Tune.”  The piece is based on Wang Wei’s seven-character quatrain “Farewell to Yuan Er on His Mission to Anxi”:

“At Weicheng, morning rain moistens the light dust, the guest house is green, with fresh willow hues. I urge you to drink one more cup of wine, west of Yangguan, there will be no old friends.”

During the Tang dynasty, the poem was adapted into a qin song (a vocal piece accompanied by the guqin). The song is divided into three major sections. In addition to repeating the original poem, it incorporates extra lines inspired by the poem’s imagery, and was widely sung by performers of the imperial music bureau.

The line “West of Yangguan, there will be no old friends” is sung three times in succession, which gave the piece its name: “Yangguan Sandie” (“Three Refrains at Yangguan”).

This arrangement was commissioned by Mr. Ho Kwan-ching, Tenor.
